Living in the US, Canada, UK, or Australia? Nothing beats seeing your parents’ faces light up on a WhatsApp video call. But teaching elderly parents (60–80 years old) how to use WhatsApp from thousands of miles away can feel impossible — until now.

This 1500+ word mobile-friendly guide is written specially for NRIs teaching parents remotely. Every step has large screenshots in mind, Hindi translations, and the exact phrases that work with Indian seniors.

NRI teaching elderly mother WhatsApp video call

Step 1: Prepare Their Phone (Do This First!)

NRI Pro Tip: Ask a cousin or neighbor to do this when you can’t visit India.
  1. Check Android version ≥ 5.0 or iPhone iOS ≥ 12
  2. Free up at least 2 GB storage
  3. Set language to Hindi or English
  4. Increase font size to Large/Extra Large
  5. Enable “Talk to Type” (voice typing)

Step 2: Install WhatsApp – Exact Screen Instructions

  1. Open Play Store (blue shopping bag)
  2. Tap search bar → Say “WhatsApp” or type “व्हाट्सएप”
  3. Tap green WhatsApp → Install → Open
  4. Tap Agree and Continue
  5. Enter Indian number (98xxxxxxxxxx) → Next
  6. OTP will come automatically. If not, read SMS aloud
  7. Allow contacts & photos → Done!

Step 3: Set Profile Photo & Name

  1. Tap their initial circle (top right)
  2. Tap camera → Take selfie
  3. Write “Mummy ❤️” or “Papa ji”

Step 4: Teach the 3 Main Tabs (Repeat Daily)

Only 3 buttons matter:

  • Chats – All messages
  • Status – Ignore for now
  • Calls – Call history
Say in Hindi: “Sirf teen button yaad rakhna hai – Chat, Status, Calls. Baaki sab chhod do!”

Step 5: How to Make a Video Call to You

  1. Open WhatsApp
  2. Tap Chats
  3. Find your name (usually at top)
  4. Tap your chat
  5. Tap the video camera icon 📹 (top right)
  6. Wait for you to pick up!

Step 6: Buttons During Video Call

  • 🔴 Red = Hang up
  • 🔄 Flip camera (show grandkids)
  • 🎤 Mute (if pressure cooker whistles)
  • 🔊 Speaker (already on)
Most Common Mistake: Phone held upside down → face appears inverted!
Fix: “Phone ka speaker wala hissa upar rakho”

Step 7: Receiving Your Call

When you call them → Big green button appears. Teach them: “Bada sa green button dabana, red nahi!”

Step 8: Sending Photos & Voice Messages

Voice Message (Easier than typing)

  1. Open your chat
  2. Press & hold microphone 🎤
  3. Speak → Release to send

Troubleshooting Table (Screenshot This!)

ProblemWhat to Tell Parents (Hindi + English)
OTP not coming“Number 10 baar check karo, +91 mat lagana”
Video freezing“Wi-Fi connect karo, mobile data band karo”
Can’t hear you“Side mein volume button upar dabao”
Accidentally ends call“Red button mat chhuna, phone aise hi rakho”

Final NRI Tips That Actually Work

  • Call at the same time every day for first 10 days
  • Keep teaching sessions under 15 minutes
  • Praise loudly: “Wow Mummy aap to expert ban gaye!”
  • Record a 2-minute video of yourself doing the steps
  • Be patient – they’ll master it in 2–3 weeks

You’ve got this. That next “Hello beta!” video call is just one patient lesson away.
